Afghanistan was my 68th country and represented a challenge for me. But in the hands of Joe, Noory and Khalid of Safarat, I never felt unsafe in the slightest (except on the roads!)
As with a number of similar countries, all of life can be found in the bazaars and markets and I loved our frequent wanderings around them.
Despite the hysteria when the Taliban took over, the law and order situation HAS improved a lot and this is reflected in how much the insurance premiums have come down by since; I’d have been more at risk if I’d been there prior to 2021. I was expecting the Taliban to be fire-breathing monsters with forked tails and cloven hooves, but that’s not how the ones we met were…granted they’ve been told to be nice to foreigners but I didn’t witness them mistreating anyone else. I certainly never expected to meet ones who had roses in their hair!
We were supposed to start in Mazar-e-Sharif in the north and then head south via Kabul and Bamiyan but the bl00dy road put paid to that. So we started in Kabul and then headed south and west – I don’t normally do organised tours but it was only 3 people and my intrepidness has limits after all I’d heard about Afghanistan! But if I went there again (which I would) I would be much more OK about travelling alone.
The Afghan people themselves are up there with the Iranians in the hospitality league tables.
We had 1 woman with us from NZ and she was treated v well – she’s done a video about it. If anything it was an advantage having her along as it got us into interactions we otherwise probably wouldn’t have had eg with children. Albeit she didn’t try and buy property / apply for a job / drive a car!
Some of the best scenes were ones I will have to carry in my head eg the Talib holding his baby in 1 arm with his AK47 slung over the other shoulder.
A smile comes to my face every time I think of Afghanistan and NOBODY can take that away from me!
Only criticism I would make: Joe, when you've ordered tea in a restaurant - give people time to actually drink it!
