This church was built in Norman times (12th century) in imitation of the architectural schemes typical of the “Byzantine cubes”: Greek cross plan and central dome. These houses of worship were generally built inside their monasteries by Basilian communities of Orthodox faith, who have left in Sicily several testimonies of their activity. The term “cuba” perhaps derives from the Latin “cupa” (cask) or from the Arabic “qubba” (dome) but there are other hypotheses.
The building fell into neglect at the end of the Middle Ages and was forgotten for five centuries, buried in weeds and decay. At the end of the nineteenth century it was rediscovered and restored by the Sicilian archaeologist Giuseppe Patricolo, known for his activity of enhancing Sicilian antiquities. The building, which has remained deconsecrated, is now the private property of the Saporito family, one of the oldest and most historic families of Castelvetrano, who made it a tomb for their dead.
Like many beautiful cathedrals on the island, the church of SS. Trinity is a happy and interesting combination of Norman, Byzantine and Arabic art. The three access doors to the church lead inside to as many naves; the side ones were intended for men, the central one, separated from the rest of the church by sturdy wooden railings, was reserved for women (in the ancient Christian churches there was a strict separation of the sexes). The three naves end in as many small apses. Some fine perforated marble windows, properly arranged, allow sunlight to enter the building in the right measure. The dome rests internally on four vigorous columns arranged at the vertices of a square. Under the floor there is a crypt, built in the same mix of styles.
The church is located in the open countryside, a few kilometers west of Castelvetrano, surrounded by a beautiful garden of palm trees, Mediterranean pines and other ornamental plants. It, since its origins dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is also popularly known as the “Cuba of Delia”, referring to the river Delia that flows nearby. The site can be visited at a cost of a few euros, making a request to the caretaker.

Interessante storia del mausoleo…peccato la mancanza di cortesia dei gestori della location che non emettono ricevuta (forse nemmeno per i ricevimenti?…) e non concedono l’accesso ai wc nemmeno ai bambini…

La chiesetta, in realtà un piccolo mausoleo privato di una storica e benestante famiglia del luogo, è incantevole e solo per questo ho dato tre stelle.
La nota di demerito nella nostra visita è stata l'assoluta mancanza di cortesia di uno dei proprietari, un ragazzetto per nulla empatico, più preoccupato di accompagnare un gruppo di turisti in un mini safari (a 60 euro/cad) in fuoristrada all'interno della proprietà piuttosto che di illustrare la storia del monumento di cui si trova erede senza, ovviamente, averci messo nulla di suo.

Poco fuori l'abitato di Castelvetrano sorge questo pregevole esempio di costruzione arabo-bizantina, risalente al XII sec. e restaurata a fine '800, dalla massa squadrata coronata da una cupoletta arabeggiante di colore rosso. La struttura, inserita in un lussureggiante giardino, è di proprietà privata, infatti al suo interno a tre absidi sono presenti le sepolture, anche recenti, di componenti della famiglia Saporito. Per accedere all'interno ci è stato richiesto un ticket di euro 2,50, ma, a mio avviso, la visione più interessante è quella esterna, questa gratuita.

chiesa (non adibita al culto) in stile arabo-normanno si trova all'interno di una proprietà privata, comunque visitabile gratuitamente grazie alla disponibilità della famiglia Saporito che mette a disposizione le chiavi per potervi accedere.All'interno sono visibili i monumenti funerari della storica famiglia Saporito, inseriti in un contesto architettonico di indiscusso valore storico e culturale.

Premetto che per un siciliano l'architettura arabo normanna fa parte del patrimonio culturale di riferimento e che gli esempi gloriosi di Palermo, Cefalù e Monreale costituiscono un vanto. Eppure, questa chiesetta, seppure condivida molte caratteristiche con i monumenti più famosi, ha un sapore tutto suo: sarà perché è inserita in un giardino ombroso, sarà per il silenzio e perché, incredibilmente, non la visita quasi nessuno, ma emana un che di spirituale e di metafisico, e ti proietta in un'altra dimensione, di pace e di riflessione.

Esempio quasi intatto di chiesa arabo normanna. Molto bella inserita in proprietà privata viene usata con i giardini limitrofi per eventi. Mentre il verde è tenuto bene la struttura ha un che' di abbandono. La nostra visita quasi in incognito in quanto sia il baglio confinante che la proprietà erano deserti. Merita di più.

Bellissima costruzione immersa in un altrettanto bel parco, tra il verde dei prati e gli alberi. Finalmente dopo tanti anni ho potuto ammirare questo gioiello dell'arte .

This rare monument of Norman-Byzantine architecture outside of Palermo or Cefalù is a jewel worth visiting both for aficionados of the building style and Medieval art history and for its surroundings. For many years an elderly lady who lived on the premises 24/7 and who'd come out if she heard any voices or doorbells, would hand visitors the key who'd then unlatch the gate chain and carry on by themselves. Today the Saporito family who owns the private chapel and crypt, where its ancestors are entombed, manages visits in the following manner: they hand the key to visitors, charge a few euros about 2-3, when you ring the bell at the nearby banqueting hall "Baglio Trinità". Someone comes out to open the gate of the enclosed garden, the church door and the crypt door below and switches on the indoor lights for you. It is always best to call ahead though to ensure that someone is on site to welcome you.

Gli esempi di arte arabo-normanna non sono molti in Sicilia, soprattutto al di fuori del circuito palermitano. Ogni testimonianza ulteriore assume quindi un valore ancora più marcato, come nel caso della Chiesa della Santissima Trinità di Delia.
Il monumento sorge all’interno di una proprietà privata. Le indicazioni per giungervi sono chiare, tuttavia una volta arrivati bisogna suonare presso l’attigua abitazione (il Baglio Trinità) per accedere alla chiesa, ovviamente dietro corresponsione di un contributo.
Peccato non vi sia alcun servizio a supporto. Sarebbe stato bello conoscere dettagli storici ed aneddoti della chiesa, senza che il tutto sia delegato al laconico cartello posto all’ingresso del parco.
Il fatto che il luogo sia location di eventi, quali matrimoni, sicuramente influisce sulle condizioni impeccabili del parco antistante e del monumento, in condizioni impeccabili, si all’esterno che all’interno dove sono sepolti gli appartenenti al casato che ne detiene la proprietà.
Il monumento sorge all’interno di una proprietà privata. Le indicazioni per giungervi sono chiare, tuttavia una volta arrivati bisogna suonare presso l’attigua abitazione (il Baglio Trinità) per accedere alla chiesa, ovviamente dietro corresponsione di un contributo.
