This church was built at the end of the fifteenth century in late Gothic style, to house the mausoleum of the Tagliavia Aragona family, who at the time exercised the lordship in Castelvetrano. At the same time a Dominican convent was built on the right side of the temple. The religious complex was therefore named after the Spanish saint who founded the Order. About a century later Charles of Aragon Tagliavia (called “Magnus Siculus”) one of the most powerful representatives of the family, financed the expansion of the church and the realization of the rich interior decoration, in a style that already preludes the famous Sicilian Baroque.
With the advent of the Kingdom of Italy the convent was expropriated and became the property of the municipality of Castelvetrano, while the church remained open to the faithful. In 1968 both buildings were damaged by the disastrous earthquake that struck the Belice Valley; a patient and dedicated restoration lasted more than 40 years followed, at the end of which the church regained, at least in part, its primitive splendor. Today the former convent of San Domenico houses the classical high school "Giovanni Pantaleo".
The façade of the church, clad in simple bricks and not completely rebuilt after the earthquake, has a very sober appearance, just softened by a broken gable portal and a small stone balustrade under the only window. So much austerity contrasts sharply with the lush iconographic apparatus of the interior, which in some parts literally carpets every square inch. Stands out, at the end of the church, the rich scenery of the "Chapel of the Choir", entirely decorated in the sixteenth century by the painter Antonino Ferraro from Palermo. The dome that crowns the room is frescoed with scenes from the New Testament; elsewhere there is a blaze of statues of Apostles, Evangelists, Fathers of the Church, famous exponents of the Dominican Order (including St. Thomas Aquinas) etc. The chapel also houses the burials of Charles of Aragon Tagliavia and his wife Margherita Ventimiglia, as well as that of their son Fernando (whose lying statue appears on the lid of the sarcophagus).
The room in front of the chapel, also densely decorated with marble and statues, is dominated at the top by the so-called “Tree of Jesse”: a sumptuous colored stucco representation of the descent from the biblical Patriarch Jesse, the father of David (represented below in a semi-reclining position) of the Virgin Mary (depicted between two angels at the top, with the Child in his arms). Even the aisles are very rich in works of art, but I can not dwell on them here; you will be able to describe them much better than me the very good prepared and courteous guide of the place.
The Church of San Domenico is not the cathedral of Castelvetrano: this title belongs to the nearby Church of Maria Santissima Assunta.

The Chiesa di San Domenico in Castelvetrano is a 16th century masterpiece.
Originally commissioned by the Aragon/
Tagliavia family, the chapel was once used for their private ceremonies and now serves as the family crypt.
The focal point of the church is the incredible stucco-work, the Tree of Jesse (father of King David), created by Antonio Ferraro da Giuliana and his sons.
Unfortunately, the church was badly damaged during a major earthquake in 1968 and remain closed for 40 years. Restored over a five-year period, the church finally reopened in 2014 and is now known as the “Sistine of Sicily.”

Absolutely worth visiting. Mr. Enzo who acted as our guide explained the history of the church and its artistic content very well.
Entrance is free but a free donation is obligatory. Congratulations also to the other two volunteers who allow us to visit the church. Well done!

A jewel that Sicily should be proud of. A magnificent church that left us speechless and which is made even more beautiful by the impeccable explanation of Mr. Pasquale who accompanied us on this beautiful journey with passion and in great detail.

The church seems small from the outside but inside the space grows bigger thanks to the frescoed walls which seem to make the interior more spacious. Each surface is decorated differently: on the ceiling there is a gigantic Tree of Jesse with figures that reach three meters, frescoes and reliefs decorated with gold. Unfortunately some decorations were stolen when the church was closed for a long time, the silver of the decorations is missing together with the fresco of Saint Paul and others falling from his horse and the floor, of which only the dark tiles remain. Furthermore, the church contains some very beautiful paintings and one in particular is very rare to find since the scene depicted was forbidden to be represented: the circumcision of Jesus. The visit is guided and the explanation is detailed and really very interesting. This combined with the uniqueness and majesty of the interior of the church makes the visit very pleasant and recommended by me.

Bellissima! Da non perdere.
