we are staying here june 22nd. we want to so some excursions. is it recommended to book before we go? I particularly want to see Pompeii and Vesuvius.
any suggestions would be great!
Don’t book an excursion to Pompeii... we took the local train (two per hour, sometimes more) from Sant Agnello which is only 10mins walk from the hotel. It’s €2.40 each way to Pompeii Scavi - about 13 stops/30mins. He station is literally opposite the entrance to Pompeii, which is €15... all the “excursion tours” are €60+ each and tie you to their schedule, we much preferred to leave after a leisurely breakfast and then come away when we felt we had seen enough of the ruins which are enormous - literally the size of a city!
We also took the train to Pompeii and did not book. On the 1st Sunday of each month entry is free - huge numbers of people, but was worth it as it's an amazing place to visit. Also recommend Herculaneum which is further out (about 45 mins by train). You can get guide books at Pompeii and do take plenty of water to drink!
