I've been trying to book a hotel and have read reports that old Bagan is the way to go.
Of the main hotels in old Bagan this hotel seems to have good reviews and although more expensive than new Bagan hotels the location seems to be great.
I'll be travelling alone so have been trying to pick which hotel to book so I'd be really grateful for your advice. Ladies would you have felt comfortable staying if you'd been travelling solo? If I'm looking to do early sunrise and late sunset trips so I might be only eating in the hotel rather than other restaurants for 2 nights - would there be enough variety for that? Additionally did you travel out on day trips and return in the dark alone - did you feel safe?
Thanks so much - your comments and advice are gratefully received.
We were there as a family, but I would have no hesitation staying in this hotel on my own. The staff were wonderful and there are many other European tourists there when we stayed. I did sunset from the top of one of the many temples, and again there were many tourists there too. My son & his wife did a balloon rode at sunrise and said it was one of the best experience of their lives. The excursion was run by an Aussie guy. Eating in the hotel is great, as the restaurant looks over the Irrawaddy so has spectacular views. The pool was lovely too. although rather cold. Hire an electric bike from the hotel as they are very safe and well serviced. I loved Bagan and would definitely recommend this to any one wanting a unique and special experience. The Burmese are the friendliest, most gracious & kind people you could wish for. We did sail down the Irrawaddy from Bagan to Mandalay. Fantastic best trip and there were many single ladies doing the journey with us. I hope this helps. Angie
Hello there. I highly recommend the Began Thande. I think we enjoyed it the most of anywhere we stayed in Myanmar recently. The location in Old Began is excellent - you can walk to some of the temples and the museum and the superior bungalow rooms are very nice as is the pool and the terrace restaurant. We ate all our meals there because the setting on the river was so nice, the food good and much more convenient than going somewhere else. Yes, the hotel is a little more expensive than some other places, but well worth it in my opinion. It does get booked up so best to get a reservation soonest if you plan on staying there. The hotel will rent you an electric scooter for $10 a day or arrange for you to go out and see the sights with a taxi driver if you want. I would definitely stay two nights, maybe three including the day of your arrival. We loved the place so much that we ended up hanging around there and the pool in the afternoon when it was hot and having a leisurely breakfast each morning and relaxing dinners, in other words, relaxing and not rushing. I'm a travel writer and frequently travel alone. I would feel very, very safe here by myself. But Began and all of Myanmar is super-safe. Hope this helps.
Hi, I stayed there by myself back in 2004. Yes, a long time ago, but one thing I had to say is, as a single, I really wish I had stayed in town. The restaurant at Thande was overpriced, full of tour groups and BORING, tasteless food. Of course, the location for the temples cannot be beat, so it's a toss -up. I am going again this fall, and we'll just plan on taking taxis to get to better dining options.
Hi I would feel happy staying here alone, the restaurant has an extensive menu to suit all tastes so no worries here.
After dark they request you don't motorcycle so make sure you get back before dusk. Getting a taxi after dark is fine drivers are lovely.
Hope this helps!
