This ryokan is hard to describe. The location is unbelievable : on the pond of Genkyuen garden. You can easily find a full description of the garden on the web (including a picture of the house). Yes in this amazing garden, with the castle of Hikone towering in the back sits the old house.
The house is very old indeed, not faked. The rooms we stayed in where fronting the water and were big. The bathroom is located deeper in the house, small but cutely renovated. The house has treasures everywhere, including painted sliding doors.
The food was top quality. Delicate flavours, beautifully served on special ceramics. From the start to the dessert, what a pleasure.
And then there is the lady of the house. Graciously she made us feel at home, in this truly unique place.
I hope to come back with other members of my family to share this wonderful experience.
Hikone is a very worth wile destination when visiting Kyoto for several days, staying one night here will be the highlight of your trip.

We stayed at this ryokan for one night and it was more incredible than I could have ever imagined. I have visited Japan 6 - 8 times, and this was the most stunning experience amongst any of my visits. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful. The kaiseki meals were fabulous. The views of the garden, foot bridges, and pond from our room was too beautiful to capture in words. And the hospitality was over-the-top. An expensive stay, but worth every yen.

彦根城に伺い、ついでに八景亭に伺いました。なのですが、そのような言い方では申し訳ない眺めです。城の近くにはこの様な庭園がよくありますが、セットで行かれることをお勧めします。お殿様の当時の遊びをしのぶことが出来ます。また、閉演時間ぎりぎりなのに気持ちよく入れていただき感謝しています。

I visited this Ryokan with my eldest daughter in July 2014 and loved it so much that I wanted my husband and youngest daughter to experience this as well. I emailed with details about some food dislikes and our host was happy to arrange a special meal for the youngest daughter that did not have so much fish in it. As there were 4 of us we were given the two biggest rooms for sleeping and another room where our meals were set up. It would have to be the best experience for me as these rooms are part of the gardens of Hikone Castle and there is so much history surrounding this place. I recommend that you try this for just one night of your life, you will always remember your experience and love that fact that you have slept in a place that the Lord of Hikone Castle has entertained guests in 400 years ago. My first review I said it was something for you to experience at least once in a lifetim, but I am lucky enough to have experienced it twice!!

This was an amazing experience! Although it's the oldest ryokan in Japan, it is very well maintained and everything looks beautiful. The location is perfect!!
We felt very welcome and taken care of, and the owner + staff were fantastic.
It's not cheap, but absolutely worth it. The kaiseki dinner was really good. I don't eat meat (fish is fine) so for me he adjusted a few things without a problem. It was all delicious with a beautiful presentation.
It's right in the middle of the gardens in front of the Hikone castle.
