Staying at Hakkeitei was a privilege, even during a cold Feb 2015. We were warm & comfortable for 2 nights and ate meals that we will remember for the rest of our lives. The cost of this ryokan may appear expensive, but we think it was fantastic value. All the other comments about Hakkeitei were true for us as well. Two nights was even better than one!
We were in Japan for 10 days, and stayed in 5 star hotels/ryokan all through. but this ryokan is one which I believe is beyond the description of star rating or Michelin standards. Set in an idealic traditional Japanese garden setting overlooked by the Hikone castle, this ryokan offers the ultimate authentic Japanese experience from the cuisine to accommodation to the warm genuine Japanese service.
I lived in Hikone for a short time, and wanted to splurge when I returned to visit. I chose this ryokan based on its proximity to Hikone Castle and the palace gardens.
The owner/cook was very welcoming, and was very conversant in English. Our attendant was very hospitable and patient with us. We spoke in Japanese, and I would suggest that at least one of your party know at least a little bit to get the most out of her explanations.
The tea and okashi served at our arrival were delicious, as was the 10 course meal we received. The dishes used a wide variety of local ingredients, including Oumi Beef, one of the local delicacies. The bath incredibly relaxing, and I regretted checking in so late and not being able to luxuriate for a few minutes more.
The garden surrounding the inn is closed to the public before 10, and walking around int the provided yukata was wonderful. The attendant even allowed us to go out into the gardens at night, which was apparently an unusual request.
The futons were very comfortable and aside from some frogs chirping in the lake, the night was very quiet. It was a great night sleep after a week in hostels, and we were offered a ride back to the station upon checking out.
The stay was unequivocally the highlight of our trip.
