Our party of 4 had reserved 2 nights at the Mitake YHA by email (based on the Lonely Planet's recommendation), but we needed to cancel the first night due to our train being severely delayed due to high winds. We emailed to inform them but there was a little miscommunication and a language barrier, so they didn't think we were coming at all. Also they had an unforeseen family issue which couldn't be helped. We were waiting outside the empty hostel wondering what we were going to do... Luckily a Japanese lad who spoke fluent English was staying in a hostel opposite and they all helped us out. They got hold of the YHA owners for us, who came back promptly from Tokyo.
After all the confusion, our one night stay was lovely, and definitely worth it. The tatami rooms were comfortable and large. We had 3 rooms between the 4 of us. The roll-out beds were fairly comfortable. We had Wi-Fi and a heater. The bathroom was great - 2 low shower heads to wash and a lovely hot onsen style bath in the corner to relax in. The whole place was very clean and tidy.
Our traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious - rice, fried egg, tofu, picked veg, fried greens, squid (I think) with wasabi paste, soup and green tea.
We were charged a fee for cancelling one night, which was a shame as we did inform them, but we understand things can't be helped.
Mt Mitake is a fantastic place to visit and walk a few of the trails. Stunning views. Definitely worth a visit, and I recommend Mitake YHA.

As there is no online reservation I called them, and we could get it through with my basic japanese / their basic english. I checked in at them after a full day of hiking at 4PM (when it already gets dark), and learned that basically it's just me and a couple in the whole hostel, so I got a full traditional tatami room for myself (with air con + wifi). All this for the hostel price!
The hostel is super clean and the staff is very nice. I ordered dinner which was quite great (do it as shops and restaurant around close at 5PM), I also recommend their small japanese spa. To my great luck there was an event in Mitake shrine that evening, a nice 15 minute walk from the hostel. The next day I took the first cable down and the train back to Tokyo.
I fully recommend staying here for a night after a long hike. Just call them for a reservation and speak slowly. Keep in mind though that apart from my luck with the event in the shrine, there is absolutely nothing to do on the mountain until the morning, apart from taking a long sleep.
