When we decided to visit our son and daughter-in-law who are living in Mikasa, we told them we wanted to be close to them, and have a true Japanese experience. We got it staying at the Minkushu Ammonito (Ammonite Inn)
We left our shoes at the front door, were greeted by the inn keeper who spoke almost no English, and shown to our room. The floor of our room was covered in tatami mat, and we slept on futons on the floor, with large duvet-type covers. We did end up sleeping on the covers as well as the futon for added softness. Remember to fold up your futon each morning to help the tatami mats stay dry and fresh.
The toilet rooms (male and female separate) down the hall had slippers provided. Sinks were in the hall. The shower room is on the main floor. Our daughter-in-law spoke with the inn keeper and arranged for us to shower in the morning so we didn't disturb the family's bath schedule. Be sure to be prepared and take your own towels!
The inn keeper is very nice, made efforts to communicate with us, and was interested in what we had done during the day. When we brought in combini-gourmet for dinner one night, she showed us how to open the ketchup and mustard packet that came with our American dog.
All in all, a great experience. It was vital to have someone who spoke Japanese when we checked in, but after that we did fine with the few phrases we knew, and the bits of English the inn keeper knew.
