we stayed two nights in this relatively newish lodge hotel near the bus station in Sawando, a convenient launching place for Kamikochi and other nearby mountain attractions. Sawando is little more than a glorified parking lot with an onsen, but it's far cheaper to stay in Sawando than Kamikochi or Hirayu, and it's right on the bus route between Takayama and Matsumoto, which makes it the most convenient place to stay if you are arriving by bus. If you have a car, you're better off staying a bit farther off the main road.
Somanoya is run by an oldish couple; they are very nice and basically get the job done, but just barely with the help of a group of largely untrained part-timers. (One actually said she had started working there when her money ran out during her summer trip). We got no explanation about the hotel when we arrived, but were allowed to check in before noon. Nothing was told us that we didn't specifically ask about, and asking did not always help, though the advice the owner gave us was basically ok. Everyone staying there seemed to be Japanese.
First night dinner was a rather large assortment of items featuring basashi (raw horse), a beef dish cooked at the table, and some mysterious vegetables that were never explained; we had to ask for soup and wouldn't have known to do so if we hadn't seen it delivered to another table. The second night I was happy to see raw fish instead of raw horse, though most of the dinner was repeated; the best word to describe it would probably be "adequate." My second morning's breakfast fish had a hair on it; when I complained I was given a couple of sausages instead. The dining room is rather small and cramped, as was our non-smoking room. The second night we waited in vain for the loud intercom announcement of dinner we had heard on the first night.
The hotel's onsen is also pretty good, with a decent rotenburo, better actually than the onsen at the more expensive hotel where we stayed in Kamikochi. But why does only the women's bath have conditioner?
The futons could have used a bit more padding and one of the comforters smelled in need of a cleaning; we could easily hear our snoring neighbor through the thin walls.
There is free internet, but again, you'd have to ask as there is no information about it anywhere. The connection sometimes worked well and other times hardly at all.
The owner was very kind and offered to drive us to a nearby bus station when we ran into unexpected transportation problems (we were unaware that the road to Shirahone Onsen has been closed for repairs for the last four years).
Overall I would give the place two stars but for the kindness of the owner and the convenient location.
