Our travel agency had booked this minshuku for us for our visit to Nikko. When we arrived at Chuzenji it was very foggy and we could barely see a thing. When we arrived to the minshuku we weren't very pleased with the very old exterior, but were also relieved to finally have a place to rest.
The minshuku is held by an elderly couple, 70-ish with very basic english, but they welcomed us warmly and set us tea in our room. Our beds were already made, which is not custom in a minshuku.
Our room was very spaceous and the heater under the table was a comfortable extra. Other reviews say there was no wifi, but we did hace it. All information about it was in our room's folder.
We had dinner and breakfast here. Both were delicious!
The very best part was the view from our room! We had an open view over the calm lake and the mountain behind it. The mountain was covered in vibrant autumn colors. Autumn sets in sooner here because of the altitude.
This minshuku made us prefer traditional Japanese lodging over western hotels.
This is my second trip to Nikko. I stayed nearer to Nikko station during my first visit to Nikko. However, this time, I wanted a change of scenery and preferred a place nearer to nature and chose to be near the shores of beautiful Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. I found out about Minshuku Miharashi from a Japanese Guest House website. The reviews were good and I thought I'll give it a try. We got a large Japanese-style room which was clean and came with complimentary green tea and local TV access (wi-fi is unavailable here). Miharashi is located in front of a main road but there were hardly any vehicles on the road when we were there so we were not bothered by the noise at all. Miharashi is located about 13-15 mins walk from Chuzenji Onsen bus stop (#24). Miharashi comes with a 'family bath' room which can be privately reserved. Ideal for couples! We were also given a 40% discount coupons for a nearby onsen (natural hot spring) belonging to Lakeside Hotel which was only a 5 min walk from Miharashi. The owners of this cozy (standard) Minshuku speaks very basic English but are more than happy to help-out where they can. I booked the room with dinner and breakfast. We opted for the Japanese breakfast and dinner, which were so delicious. The prices were very affordable (you get a much better deal here then going out to eat!). Booking meals with the room is much recommended as Nikko and Lake Chuzenji area becomes almost a ghost town by 6 - 7 pm! All shops, cafes and restaurants closes by then. We will definitely return to Miharashi Minshuku the next time we visit Nikko!
