My husband and I stayed at this Ryokan for 1 night on a recent trip to Japan, and it was certainly an experience to remember! My parents had stayed here 7 years ago and so we had an idea what to expect. Despite the easily confused elderly lady running the place and the fact that the Ryokan looks like it might fall down at any minute, it was a great place to stay!
The Ryokan is clean, comfortable, cheap and close to the train station. We were only in Kumamoto as a stopover on our way down to Kagoshima, so we needed somewhere close to the station that we could lay our heads. As online booking is not available for this Ryokan, we tried to book over the phone in Japanese. Despite having a reasonable command of the Japanese language, the phone call was very confusing and I don’t think our booking was recorded. The elderly woman running the Ryokan is lovely and friendly but easily confused… However upon arrival there was no problem getting a room, I don’t think that you would ever find the place booked out.
The room was quite big and had air conditioning, which was a must in the middle of summer. The obaasan brought us iced teas, rice crackers and bananas and was happy to chat. Although the facilties are old and a bit run-down, the toilet and bath facilities were clean and convenient and there wasn’t too much noise, even though there is a fairly major road out the front. We found the Komatsu-so to be a great place of stay while in Kagoshima.
