Not all visitors will like this place. Having said that, if you have become tired of receiving a formulaic hospitality of a professionally run hotel, then this is a place where you can enjoy a more a home-like atmosphere and detox yourself from the bustle of a city life and electronic gadgets. (But in case you need internet connection, they have a WiFi and the docomo 4G coverage was excellent).
Akaigawa-Mura has been a place of fascination for me, because it has been touted as one of the most beautiful villages in Japan, but it is not easy to find a good accommodation unless you wish to whip out your Marriott Titanium status card and be in a place that might remind you of, well, other high-end snow resorts you might see in Verbier and Rimrock. The size of this village defied my understanding of how big a village ought to be - the boundary encompasses a huge expanse of open space, and for which I suspect the locals use helicopters to go for their weekly shopping in the village centre.
This place is not a hotel but a B&B run by an elderly couple, originally from Yokohama. On my rental BMW X1 the name pulled up a precise location so I suspect all satnavs have this location. The place is comfortable and has all the basic amenities, although there isn’t an en-suite bathroom/WC so some people may be eked out by this. A separate male/female toilet, 2 washbasins and a normal household bathroom for taking shower. I opted for a twin room for myself, which has a room key for the more security minded people.
The couple cooks both the dinner and the breakfast, a home cooking style Japanese food using locally produced food. They also grow their own food too. There is plenty to eat, almost overwhelming amount of food. Not everything were authentic Japanese dishes, but they were all very good and homely dishes.
For those keen to try out every single Onsen in this country (good luck, they are everywhere) the couple may point you to the village run community bath house. They gave me a ticket to hand over, and so I went before dinner.
As this review is not about Onsens I won’t go into much detail, but it was clean and well frequented by the locals. Entire families seem to coalesce in this place, where after bathing they lounge about in a large room or order some dinner.
If the dinner was good, the conversation I had with the couple and other guests were better. They explained the village life they are living, and why they chose this place - I will leave this for you to find out. But for me, I am glad I got to discuss many different things as they got me contemplate about many things in my life.
I went to bed at around 11pm, and as the room was too warm from the radiator I turned it off. The house was warm enough and slept pretty well that night. I think the near total darkness due to lack of street light probably helped.
I left the place at around 9am, to make the most of the winter sun. The winding road up to the neighbouring city Otaru was an experience, with the beautiful scenery all around. As I was driving away I felt a bit envious of their relaxed lifestyle.

More like a home stay. Have a dog freely roaming rooms and kitchen; beware if allergies.
Friendly and fun, but not fun r everyone. Will share table with other guests and owners;don't expect privacy.
No bath ( ride to nearby onsen ) and bathroom sink are is in the open (no privacy to brush teeth , do makeup etc )

似たような家が点在しているのでナビに頼っていると迷います。「このあたりです。」とおおざっぱです。とりあえずセイコーマートをめざしましょう。変わった造りの部屋だと思ったら、オーナーの手作りでした。木にこだわって作っているので、安心感があります。農地、草原の中に立っているので窓から山、木が見え、鳥の声、虫の声と都会にはないものばかりでした。カルデラの里なので山に囲まれ、農家が点在し、散歩をすると、人の生活している場所の安心感がありました。トマトジュースは嫌いなのですが、少し入れてもらって、そのあと、怒涛のお代わりをしました。ベーコン、ハムは、これが本当の味なのだと知りました。スーパーで買っているものは、安価で流通させる必要上、添加物満載なのですね。事情があって、犬が屋内にいるので、犬嫌いだと厳しいかもです。お風呂は近くの温泉に行きました。

雪で看板が倒れており場所がわかりにくかったですが、オーナー夫妻が親切で、料理も美味しく、焼酎のトマトジュース割りも美味しく頂けました。特にたこの燻製と燻製豚肉のステーキが絶品でした。レンタカーで行きましたが、余市までの送迎もしてくれるとのことで、余市や小樽に行かれる方は是非宿泊されてみてはいかがでしょうか。
