How long and how easy is it to drive from joburg airport to elephant plains please
Past guests - is typhoid really necessary if traveling only from Johannesburg to the lodge (nowhere else in SA)? Hep A is set and will get the malaria script. Trying to weigh cost against the risk based on the area for typhoid. Thanks in advance!

We researched this exhaustively. We ended up just getting malaria pills and took half of them then blew it off - my legs and ankles started to swell from the Malarone and we heard from locals that they don't take anything at all, ever, and just are careful about mosquitoes, of which we saw NOT ONE at Elephant Plains. The guides in Cape Town told us it irritated them that people were being told that they had to get all these pills etc - that it made them sound like a 3rd world country, and they maintained no one has anything to worry about beyond normal travelling misadventures. We drank the water. We ate everything. If we go back to Kruger area I doubt we'll bother even getting Malarone. Malaria sucks, nothing wrong with taking Malarone (we had weird dreams too) oh, also - the older experienced safari guests - some took Malarone, some didn't. Hope this helps - the going thought is that "recommended" isn't the same as "required" when it comes to the CDC - they'll recommend everything. My mom took a bunch of stuff when she went to west Africa, but that is an entirely different scenario. Not as safe there....I went to Morocco for three weeks and no one at the time told us to take ANYTHING, so we didn't, and we ate and drank everything within reason. I hope you have a great time!
Great review, thanks! We're doing our research for next February, we stayed in Arathusa but have had elephant plains recommended, so was interested in your comments about flying into Arathusa. Did you book this yourself, or through an agent?any info would be much appreciated - we had a transfer from the airport & wished we'd looked into flying!
