when walking around in the old parts of the city you will definitely see the Teatro Solis. Its an interesting architecture worth seeing.
when visiting Ciudad Viejo and 18th Julio de Avenida you will also see the Palacio Salvo near the plaza Independencia.
when you start walking from Plaza Independence you can then walk all the way up on Avenida 18 de Julio. all the shops are here and many old buildings to see.
When in Montevideo, you definitely have to visit Ciudad Viejo. I would even recommend that you find a hotel and stay in this part for easy access.
